Properties of coated papers containing kaolin Kaolin applications in paper and board coating Kaolin use depends on the paper grade and geographical region. In Europe, most offset LWC formulations contain more or less equal proportions of carbonate and clay. Rotogravure grades still rely on larger proportions of high-aspect-ratio kaolin, usually with talc, to provide smoothness
