The ForestBioFacts learning environment is undergoing an update project. The latest knowledge, research results and statistics in the field are being updated to the themes. The four-year project will review and update all 16 themes.

The ForestBioFacts learning environment update and review project is divided into four years, with four thematic units being reviewed and updated each year.

“The purpose of the update project is to keep ForestBioFacts up-to-date and produce new information on innovations and research in the field,” says PI’s development manager. Vera Hallikainen.

The first four themes, Introduction to forest-based bioeconomy, Natural fiber products, Man-made bio-based fibre products and Environmental control and management, has now been updated.

During the update process, a group of twenty experts from different organizations have made suggestions for changes to the articles. Based on the suggestions, the content has been updated with expert partners and a master’s student from Aalto University. New content has been produced Natural fiber products, Environmental control and management and Man-made bio-based fiber products themes.

“Some of the content reviewers were already creating original content, but new experts from research institutes, universities and forestry companies were also reviewing,” says Hallikainen.

“It was educational to be involved in the Forest-BioFacts content review and update project; at the same time, we also updated our own expertise. We use ForestBioFacts at the Kirkniemi factory and its use is encouraged, among others, by summer workers in the sector,” says Sappi’s Environmental Manager. Kirsi Tuominen.

Aalto University Master’s student Mynul Sajib described Man-made bio-based fiber products -theme update work as a great experience.

“ForestBioFacts is an excellent platform for students and industry experts to increase their understanding of the importance of bio-based alternatives. I was also able to deepen my own understanding of them during the update work.”

In the future, the plan is to develop a tool that allows users to submit their correction and update suggestions.

New look

The visual appearance of ForestBioFacts has also been renewed in connection with the updates.

“New theme videos were updated to each theme, as a throw-in to the topics,” says Hallikainen.

The digital learning environment is based on the Papermaking Science and Technology book series, from which some subject areas have yet to be included in the themes.

“Using artificial intelligence, Natural fiber products -theme has now been updated with Wet pressing and Web forming topics.”

The upcoming update cycle will be launched by mapping content reviewers. The goal is to release the next four theme updates in March 2026.
