To improve the usability and accessibility of the ForestBioFacts learning environment, several development projects have been launched this year. Artificial intelligence is being used as a tool.
The ForestBioFacts learning environment is not only a repository of information but is specifically aimed at fostering learning.
“We want to support learning by developing quizzes for testing knowledge. Microsoft’s Copilot AI has been harnessed to create these quizzes,” explains PI’s project coordinator Atte Jäntti.
The first quiz series will be created and piloted in the Natural Fibre Products section, which is one of the themes that were updated earlier this year.
“When a theme’s content is reviewed by an expert, they will also assess the AI-generated questions. Similarly, the quality of all quiz series across themes will be assured.”
The next development stage involves creating learning-supportive profiles or so called “learning wallets”. These wallets will make it easy for users to track which sections of ForestBioFacts they’ve studied and which quiz series they’ve completed.
The learning wallet is further being developed for certificate creation.
“With a certificate, one could demonstrate completion of a specific area, such as the Learning Path A, and attach it to their CV, LinkedIn profile, or present it to their employer or educational institution.”
Interaction is enhanced
AI utilisation is also being tested in the creation of new content. Content is produced in collaboration with field experts, who can verify its reliability and fill any gaps.
“Copyright and data security must be carefully considered, so users are not allowed to export contents to AI services,” Jäntti reminds us. Collaborations are being carried out with experienced experts such as Erland Hermansson (Natural Fibre Products) and Roope Husgafvel (Environmental Management).
The learning environment seeks to become more interactive by making providing feedback easier. Future possibilities include creating functionalities that allow users or experts reviewing updates to suggest modifications, such as correcting typos or pointing out outdated information directly as comments linked to specific content.
New learning is encouraged by adding gamified elements to the content. This is done in collaboration with bioproduct engineering students from Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Interactive content, such as entertaining games and tests, will be developed for the Introduction theme. These new functionalities are planned for release later this year.
